The 4th graders studied hard for the Spelling Bee ... and we had lots of fun having the first round in our classroom!

It was hard work and a lot of stress, but it was so good for them!

Our FINAL FOUR were Yunee, Andrew, Kunho, and Jay!

It seems that time has been flying and I am so behind on adding to our classroom blog!

Here is a picture from Kunho's small birthday celebration at school.

These pictures are from our class Valentine's Day party.

We ate jajangmyeon and shared Valentine cards and candies with each other! I enjoy celebrating this holiday and everyone passing out valentines to the class! Of course, I also like Chocolate! :)

We have added 2 new boys to our class in the last month, increasing our number of students to 14! With a more even split, there are now 6 boys and 8 girls.

Goodbye, Grace! We're Praying for You!

We had to say our first goodbye this year ... a lot earlier than we expected!

Grace is leaving CCS and we are so excited to see the wonderful God things is going to do with her life in the future!

We will miss her greatly, but we just want to say "Thank You" to God for letting us be part of her life!

We love you, Grace!

Celebrating Christmas Together

The last day of school before Christmas break we celebrated Christmas together! One of the first things we did was send the DOZENS of cookies we had made to the teachers and staff of CCS. Every student had the opportunity to deliver our goodies!

We also made some Christmas ornaments together and had a gift exchange.

No party is complete without food, and so we enjoyed a delicious lunch together that was prepared by some of the mothers in our class!

Thanks, Moms, for all your help!

Mrs. Dyck received some cards and gifts from the class, as well as tickets for her and Mr. Dyck to see JUMP and have dinner at OUTBACK! What a special treat!

Christmas Baking!

WHAT FUN we had making sugar cookies together!

Mrs. Cha, Mrs. Jang, and Mrs. Yoo came in to help us and we had such a great time!

We made cookies in the shapes of snowmen, gingerbread men, stars, Christmas trees, angels, bells, and reindeer!

After HOURS of baking the cookies were wrapped and given to the staff and teachers of CCS - hand delivered by every student!

Playing Board Games

We read a story last week called "Stealing Home" by Mary Stoltz. In the story, the main character, Thomas, enjoys playing board games with his grandfather.

Many students brought in some board games last Friday and enjoyed playing games with each other!

Making Caramel Apples

We carefully unwrapped 2 kilo's of caramels and placed them into a crock pot for the afternoon ...

then we dipped our apples in the smooth, creamy caramel!

What a sticky, tasty treat!

Although it's not that important of a holiday, we enjoyed sharing some yummy treats with our friends on November 11th, Pepero Day!

I'm pretty sure EVERYBODY was happy! Especially Mrs. Dyck!

Class Pictures

Miss Bigney decided to take us on a mini-field trip for class pictures! The 5th graders and us went up to Namsan and took some class photos with beautiful fall colors as our backgrounds!

It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed being out in the sunshine and fresh air!

Afterwards we got to eat McDonald's, everyone's favorite part of the day! We don't get to do it often, because we KNOW it's not very healthy, but it sure was a good memory!

Yunee's Birthday Party

We celebrated Yunee's birthday party on Monday, October 19th! Her mom brought some yummy cupcakes and treats for us, as well as goodie bags!

Science Unit Project - Due NOV. 9

Choose one of the following projects:

1. Plant Parts Poster – use old magazines or catalogs along with markers, colored pencils, or other art materials to make a poster of a plant. Draw or label the following parts and explain what each does: root, stem, leaf, flower, cells, seeds.

2. Digestive System Poster – Make a poster showing the path of spaghetti with meatballs through the digestive system. Begin in the mouth and end in the large intestine. First, decide what kinds of nutrients are in each food. Then identify the part of the digestive system where each kind of nutrient is broken down. Label all the parts on your poster.

3. Parts of a Flower – Observe a flower. If a real flower is not available, you may use a photograph of one. Draw a sketch or make a model of the flower and label its parts. Explain the function of each part.

James had another doctor's appointment this past week and the pins have been removed! He brought them to school and everyone was quite interested in seeing (and touching) them! Praise the Lord for the healing to James' arm!

Science: The Body Systems

We've been studying the organ systems of the body lately in Science. In order to better understand the respiratory system we counted our breathing at rest and then after jumping up and down for 15 seconds.

We also kept track of our heart beats at rest and then after exercise. This helped us learn about the circulatory system.

We studied the skeletal and muscular systems lastly. A student had an idea for demonstrating the muscular system ... arm wrestling. It was unconventional, but everyone really wanted to try it. I told the kids that I was most likely risking my job and they may have a new teacher on Monday, but I allowed students who wanted to try take a turn. Don't worry, no one was hurt !

James, on the other hand, has had his cast taken off. He still has it wrapped and has to do exercises daily to build his muscles back up, but he is quite excited about the improvement, and so are we!

Planting Seeds

We read a story this week at school called "The Gardener" by Sarah Stewart. The main character in the story develops a passion for gardening and uses it to make others happy, too.

After reading the stories, we wrote how-to paragraphs on planting seeds. Each group shared their paragraph with the class, then we all planted seeds! We can't wait to watch them grow!

We had a GREAT end of the year party!

We started out playing Putt Putt Golf at Yongsan Station.

Then we went to Mrs. Dyck's house for some food, fun, and games!

PANCAKE DAY!

On May 15th our class had a special opportunity to cook in class! Everybody pitched in and we were able to make lots of yummy pancakes from scratch! Mrs. Kim stopped by to help and to taste-test! She even said they were "GREAT!"

We all took turns measuring and mixing ingredients together and cooking the pancakes!

We added butter, syrup, and whipped cream and boy, were they tasty!

If you'd like to try making pancakes at home, here's the recipe we used:

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Combine all ingredients in a blender. Puree until smooth.
Pour batter onto the griddle, to form 5 pancakes. Flip pancakes when edges appear to harden. Cook pancakes on other side for same amount of time until golden brown.

Celebrating Summer Birthdays!

Since I came to CCS in January, our class was able to celebrate every student's birthday! We had 3 birthdays in February, 2 in March, and 2 in April. That leaves only 2 - and they are both in the summer, July and August. So, we decided we must CELEBRATE!

We all hope that you have wonderful birthdays this summer, Jihye and Paolo!

Our AMAZING Social Studies Unit Projects

Instead of a traditional test at the end of our last unit on the Southwest part of the US, I decided to let the children do a group project.

I randomly divided the students into 2 groups. Each group had to choose 4 major events in the history of the Southwest and then each student was responsible for creating something 3D to represent that event.

You should have already seen individual pictures of your child's work, but here are the two timelines that we ended up with! They did a GREAT job!
